Port Coquitlam is the eastern-most "Tri-Cities" community, at the junction of the Pitt River and the Fraser River, with the very pretty Coquitlam River on the western boundary. Port Coquitlam (often called "PoCo") is a small town surrounded by the much more spread out Coquitlam, and lies across the Pitt River from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. In 1991, the city annexed Douglas Island in the middle of the Fraser River. Port Coquitlam is home to the main Canadian Pacific Railway yard in British Columbia, which provides a diverse industrial base, but divides the city in two.
Commuting to Vancouver using the West Coast Express or by road (along the Lougheed Highway & Barnet Highway or via the Trans-Canada) is about 50 minutes. The Mary Hill Bypass (Highway 7B) runs along the Pitt and Fraser rivers connecting Highway 7 to the Trans-Canada Highway by the Port Mann Bridge.
There are retail clusters around the Port Coquitlam Station and along the Lougheed Highway, though most shoppers just head over to Coquitlam Centre
Port Coquitlam's school are part of School District 43 Coquitlam.. There are 12 elementary and 4 middle, and 2 senior secondary schools in Port Coquitlam. The schools offer both French immersion and ESL (English as a Second Language) programs. Fancophone programs are offered at Millside School (K-6), Como Lake Junior Secondary (7-9), and Centennial Senior Secondary (10-12). There is also the British Columbia Christian Academy. Post-secondary opportunities are broad with a Douglas College campus in the City Centre, with two year programs and university transfer programs; Simon Fraser University is located in neighbouring Burnaby.
he Coquitlam area has a number of parks including Coquitlam River Park. There is also the 29 kilometre PoCo Trail, that runs around the edge of the municipality. There are a number of other parks, plus skating and aquatic facilities
There then to be a lot of older bungalows and ranchers; with some new executive detached dwellings. A large portion of the homes date back to the '60s and '70s and are of vintage and medium quality. There are new executive homes in Citadel Heights, and much of the future development will be centered around Riverwood, along the Pitt River. Homes in Port Coquitlam run $512-578,000.
