This community is along the southwest side of the 770 acre (3 km2) Burnaby Lake, and has great views of the lake and of the forested southern slopes of Burnaby Mountain. The lake is home to over 70 species of birds and visited by 214 species over the year, and was formed about 12,000 during the last ice age. The lake has large volumes of sediment, peat moss, decomposing plants, and water lilies making it unsuitable for swimming, but great for rowing and other boating activities.

The neighbourhood is close to municipal services just above Deer Lake. Since the construction of the Trans-Canada Highway, the residential neighbourhoods like Buckingham Heights have been physically separated from the lake

This neighbourhood is mostly single family housing.

The area is served by two elementary schools, with a public library and high school nearby.

The neighbourhood is very close to Metrotown's shopping, and with many stores and restaurants along Canada Way.

There area 19 km of walking and hiking trails circling the entire lake. The Burnaby Equestrian Centre has access to 6 km of horseback riding trails, along the southern and eastern sides of the lake. The lake is home to the Burnaby Canoe and Kayak Club and the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club, all in the Burnaby Lake Pavilion at the west end of the lake.
