These communities lie on the south shore of the Glenmore Reservoir, and were part of the District of Rockyview until they joined Calgary in 1956. While some homes in this area date back to the early 1960s, most of the development in this area occurred in the 1980s. Pump Hill and Palliser areas known for their luxury single-family homes, and proximity to the Glenmore Landing Shopping Centre. Just to the west is Oakridge, with more affordable homes, and some high rise condos with views of the reservoir, downtown and the mountains. Snuggled on the north side of 90th Avenue, closer to the Reservoir is the neighbourhood of Bayview. South of Southland are two neighbourhoods, Braeside and Cedarbrae. These are affordable neighbourhoods with a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and condos, with a mix of owned and rented dwellings. Commuters in this area get funnelled down a very busy 14th Street on their way downtown.
This area is mature, with a full range of schools in both school boards, from elementary to high school levels. The local public library is either Elbow at Southland or by Southcentre.
This area is serviced by Glemore Landing (with many high-end shops and boutiques) on 90th, and the Co-op Shopping Centre at 24th and Southland. There are small plazas with grocery stores at 90th and 24th, Braeside at 24th, and Braeside at Southland. Macleod Trail's shopping bonanza is also accessible via Southland or Anderson roads, including the large Southcentre Mall.
Most of the recreation is around the reservoir, with a sailing club on the east shore and the south shore. Heritage Park is the recreational focus of the community. Also of interest is the Southland Leisure Centre with its wave pools, a number of private fitness facilities. Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club is to the south of the community, and the Tsuu T'ina Nation Golf Course is to the southwest. Nearby movie theatres are in Southcentre and at Southland Dr.
The community is mostly single family homes, with those in Pump Hill being executive homes (some worth WELL over a million dollars), and with some multi-unit townhouses along Southland Drive, west of the Southland Leisure Centre. There are some high rise apartment buildings on 90th Avenue at 24th Street overlooking the reservoir.
