Ottawa has a vibrant mix of century old neighbourhoods and newer post-War suburbs inside and outside the Greenbelt areas. The East End (from the Rideau Canal to Orleans) tends to have more French-speaking residents.
The West End communities, west of Dow's Lake and stretching south into Nepean and west to Kanata, are more English-speaking. The South End, meanding south of Hunt Club, and extending to Manotick on the Rideau Canal are closest to the Greenblet agricultural and parkland ring around the city.
On the Quebec side, fomerly separate towns of Aylmer, Hull, and Gatineau are now part of the amalgamated City of Gatineau.
