New Toronto is a beach community at the foot of Islington and Kipling Roads. New Toronto grew in the 1890s because of the adjoining 1906 Grand Trunk Railway railyards and repair shop, followed by the 1917 Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant. Because of the commercial tax base, this working class community was blessed with low residential taxes during the period from 1920 to 1967 when New Toronto was a separate town, before it was amalgamated into Etobicoke. The industrial lands are now gradually being converted to residential developments.
Motorists get to downtown Toronto in 15 minutes via Lake Shore Boulevard or the Gardiner Expressway. Transit users can take the TTC bus along Lake Shore Boulevard West connecting to the Mimico and Long Branch GO Train stations to zip riders to Union Station, and the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line.
The community is served by three public elementary schools, a catholic elementary school, a public high school, a public library and is adjacent to Humber College's Lakeshore campus.
The community shops at the lively "Lakeshore Village" retail district, on Lakeshore Boulevard West, with a mix of stores & restaurants. Power shoppers either head north to the big box stores n The Queensway or to the Sherway Gardens mall just northwest of Highway 427 & Gardiner Expressway.
New Toronto is best know for its lakeside parks & marinas, and the wetlands at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. These parks have great vies of downtown Toronto to the east. The community also has in indoor pool, a running tack, and an arena at Donald Russell Memorial Park, and also has an outdoor pool, seniors centre, baseball diamond, two tennis courts, a children's playground, a second arena, and a lawn bowling club.
The community has many small bungalows and modest 2-storey homes built from the 1910s to the 1950's. Larger single family homes, built more recently, tend to be closer to the lake. There is also a subsidized housing complex with a funky looking artists co-op north of Lake Shore Blvd, close to the College. New residential developments are being built at the edge of the industrial areas, along Birmingham Rd. Homes is this community are the in the low to medium price ranges.
