This community (partly in Victoria, partly in Saanich) is where the downtown commercial and industrial meets the residential homes and apartment blocks on the north side of the Gorge. Burnside Road, on the northeast serves as a gateway for traffic route through the area. The area is conveniently served by Gorge Road Hospital. Burnside has 4,420 residents with another 7,000 in the Tillicum area. The community has been growing quickly, and has a high proportion of working class and single parent families. The area has an active community association.
New homes construction in the area has been largely condominiums and townhouses, apartments and duplexes.
The area has two public schools and is served by Colquitz Junior Secondary and Spectrum Community High School just north of the Island Highway (in Saanich) and SJ Willis (in Victoria) . To the north, up Burnside and Interurban is one campus of Camosun College, to the east, and on Gorge and then Hillside is the other campus.
The area is a retailer's heaven, primarily because of the junction of Island Highway (1) with the Pat Bay Highway (17). Great shopping is at the Tillicum, Town and Country and Mayfair Shopping Centres (kind of a "golden triangle").
Recreation in the area is varied, with the Gorge Park to the south (and the Gorge Rowing Club boathouse on Jutland) offering saltwater recreation. Tillicum Park & Cuthbert Homes Park with the GR Pearkes Arena offering more urban pursuits in the northwest, and Swan Lake and the Swan Lake-Christmas Hill nature Sanctuary offering freshwater recreation and wildlife to the northeast.
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail traces along the northern and eastern edge of the community, linking it with Colwood (through to Sooke) to the West and downtown Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula to the east.
