Westbank is a self sufficient community on the west shore of Okanagan Lake, opposite Kelowna. With the new William R Bennet 5 lane bridge connecting Westside with Kelowna, replacing the old 2 land floating bridge, this community has excellent access to Kelowna's services and employment opportunities. Westside is an attractive community for families, professionals, and retirees alike. Westside became a municipality in 2007, and includes the area of West Kelowna, Lakeview Heights, Shannon Lake, Smith Creek, Westbank, and Glenrosa.
There are shopping centres, restaurants, recreation and banking within Westside. This is an area of moderate to high priced homes, with a mix of rural, lakeshore and view homes homes and even lakeshore homes. Westbank is the higher density community where Highway 97 becomes divided with two one-way streets through Westbank's shopping district, with shopping centres, big box stores, fast food restaurants and services on both sides of the highway.
Six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school are located in Westbank and the surrounding Westside. Westbank also has a private religious school for Adventists
The community has a charming downtown shopping area, with a one-way south and a one-way north, each with plenty of shops and services meeting the needs of residents and visitors alike. The town's facilities are located on both sides of the highway, with attractions found mostly on the west (uphill) side, and the town's popular beach is just down the hill. There are also major merchants and big box stores in Westbank including Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Superstore, Staples, London Drugs, and Walmart.
The family-oriented Crystal Mountain ski hill is close by, The area also has significant trails for cross-country, telemark skiing, and snowshoeing. Westbank has a number of fine wineries
The community has a couple of neighourhoods. Westside is the first subdivision you reach when you climb the Highway 97 hill, and has a new sub-division called Trader's Cove. The community is home to Trader's Cove Marine Park for boating) and Bear Creek Provincial Park (for hiking). Homes in Westside area are moderate to higher priced. West Kelowna Estates is north of Highway 97, as it climbs up from the Okanagan Lake bridge, and has numerous lakeshore homes along Westside Road. This area is quite hilly and is higher priced than other areas of the Westside because of the lake views, with many sloping lots. Lakeview Heights is south of the Highway 97, and house a mix of house sizes and price ranges, and is close to shopping and two wineries. Westbank itself straddles Highway 97 and it is the commercial centre of the Westside. The Shannon Lake neighbourhood is surrounded by Shannon Lake Regional Park and the Shannon Lake Golf Course, with quite streets & cul-de-sacs and most homes moderately price and built after 1990. Glenrosa is located in the hills north of Westbank along Glenrosa Rd which winds up to the Crystal Mountain Ski hill. This area has single family and multi-family units, as well as some large lots with greenery.
