To the west of Calgary are a number of communities popular for country living with close access to the city. Between the Bow River and the Elbow River (moving west from Calgary) are Springbank, Elbow Valley & Redwood Meadows, and Bragg Creek, and north of the Bow River is the town of Cochrane.
These communities are served by the Rocky View School district the Separate Calgary Catholic School District. Cochrane has schools right in the community, while in Bearspaw they are close, and in the more isolated Redwood Meadows and Bragg Creek students are bused.
Cochrane is an entirely self-contained community, with western-themed shopping in the downtown core and a new shopping mall. Bragg Creek has a small plaza, that is also popular with visitors to the community.
Cochrane provides a number of recreational opportunities, with its Bow River parkland, and the Cochrane Ranche. The Western Heritage Centre is a popular museum. For adults, there hang gliding on Big Hill, and golfing at the Gleneagles Golf Course. Cochrane is only a few minutes drive from the Trans-Canada Highway to Banff, and Calaway Park a regional kids amusement park (open summers).
In Cochrane, new homes are being built in Gleneagles, West Valley, West Terrace and Bow Meadows, and tend to be single-family homes on large lots. In Bragg Creek, Springbank, and the Elbow Valley, homes tend to be acreages or executive homes on large lots.
