Port Hope is a small community of 16,000 nestled between Highway 401 and 2 along the north shore of Lake Ontario, about 110 km east of Toronto. The town is located where the Ganaraska River flows into Lake Ontario, and was settled by United Empire Loyalists who were given land grants following the American Revolution. The town was a major manufacturing centre in the late 1800s, and has managed to retain much of its period charm over the past century. The recently opened (2003) Northumberland Hills Hospital is only 10 minutes away
