These communities lie south of the 401 between the West Don Valley, Yonge and Leslie Streets. The 1804 saw and gristmills that are the source of the community's names are long gone, and today the community is best known for office towers and high-end condos. The St Andrews private school owned the lands north of York Mills between Yonge and Bayview, and relocated to Aurora in 1924, and the land was developed into a golf course, which in turn was sold to developers in the 1950s (who used golf terminology in many street names). The noted Canadian industrialist E.P. Taylor was a key developer of York Mills and the York Mills Plaza Windfields was defveloped on the former site of E.P. Taylor's Windfields Farm, which he founded in 1937 and became one of the top thoroughbred racing stables in North America (its Northern Dancer won the 1964 Kentucky Derby). When the reclusive Taylor moved to the Bahamas in1968 he sold off the farm to developers, and donated a 30 acre park and his mansion to the city. The park-dotted community has attracted upper-middle income home owners and has curvey streets following the landscape, Motorists can reach downtown Toronto via Yonge Street, and Highway 401 is easily accessed via Yonge or Bayview Avenue. TTC bus riders are well served on the east-west York Mills bus which connects to the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. The north-south Bayview bus route connects to the Sheppard Rapid Transit line and York University's Glendon Campus. In the north east corner of the neighbourhood is the Oriole GO Train station, which zips commuters to Union Station (or north to Richmond Hill). 
SchoolsThe community is served by 7 public elementary schools, 2 Catholic elementary schools, 1 high school, 4 private schools (1 is French language). Post secondary students are very close to York University's Glendon Campus on Bayview, Seneca College's Denham Campus to the northeast, and can access University of Toronto and Ryerson University via the Yonge-University-Spadina subway. Shopping Locals have limited shopping & restaurants along Leslie Street, but this suburban community lives for its malls. There's the Don Mills Shopping Centre (Don Mills Road & Lawrence Avenue), the higher end Bayview Village Shopping Centre (Bayview & Sheppard Avenues), and the small York Mills Centre (Yonge Street & York Mills Road) and York Mills Plaza (Bayview Avenue & York Mills Road) 
RecreationThe community is surrounded by beautiful parks with paved recreational pathways including Winfield Park along Wilket Creek (with ponds and 200 year old trees), and the East Don Valley Parkland trail just east of Leslie, both (with an archaeological dig at an Indian village dated about six-hundred years ago). Just south of Lawrence is Edwards Gardens with a rose garden, nursery, greenhouses, and home to Toronto Botanical Gardens. The community is dotted with small parks and playgrounds, and also has two ice arenas, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, several baseball diamonds, and 3 tennis courts. Golfer can access the Don Valley Golf Course (public) off Yonge Street. Homes Most of the homes in York Mills fate from the late 1920s to mid 1960s, while most Windfields homes were built in the 1970s and 80s. York Mills has many executive style homes on well-treed properties, with a range of designs from English Cottage, Tudor, and ranch style bungalows. Newer custom-built homes are being built throughout the neighbourhood. The much-newer Windfields homes are typically modernist style homes ranging in size from 1,000 to 4,000 sq ft. There are high-end condo buildings around Yonge Street & York Mills Road, and entry level condos & townhouses at Bayview Avenue & York Mills Road.
