Malton is the community that includes Pearson Airport, and lies between the 403 and 427 and between the 401 and the 407. North of the airport (around .Derry and Airport roads) is residential, while south and west of their airport is industrial land. The airport hotels and hospitality industry includes many properties that are in Etobicoke (Toronto) but are included in this FoundLocally site for practical reasons.

Malton was named in the 1840s for the native village in England of 1819 settler Richard Halliday. The arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1854 provided local farmers access to Toronto markets. The village of Malton was subdivided in 1855, was the county seat in 1859 only to be replaced by Cooksville shortly afterwards. The community was pretty quite until the construction of the airport in 1937, when the Toronto Harbor Commission acquired 13 farms adjacent to the village. The airport provided wartime prosperity during the 1940s, and the post-war business of aeronautical design and manufacturing was led by the famous 1950s "Avro Arrow", a fighter plane still believed to have been years ahead of its time.

Schools

There are 25 elementary schools, 3 secondary schools, 2 private/religious schools in this community, as well as 2 libraries. It is a short commute to Sheridan College in Brampton to the northeast, or Humber College to the southeast, and slightly longer drive to York University to the east along Steeles.

Shopping

The community has the Westwood Shopping Mall and a couple of smaller plazas. There is also the Woodbine Centre nearby on Rexdales (with a movie theatre).

Recreation

To the north of the airport are a number of major Toronto-area entertainment & hospitality attractions, the International Centre for tradeshows & conventions, Woodbine Race Track, and for the younger set, Wild Water Kingdom waterpark. For movies, Malton residents head to Rexdale for the Woodbine Centre movie theatre. Malton has a number of parks, but the community is bisected by parkland along Mimico Creek. Just to the east is the Humber River with more parklands, Conservation Areas and recreational pathways.
