    St Boniface Hospital Museum

This community is the French-speaking heart of Winnipeg, and is the largest French-speaking community west of Thunder Bay. There are many French institutions including the Centre Cultural Franco-Manitobain, the St Boniface Cathedral, a the College universitaire de Saint-Boniface, and Le Cercle Molier, to the east of the community are Winnipeg’s major industrial areas, including the Refinery and the Stockyards. The community also is home to the St Boniface Hospital and the Tache Nursing Centre.

    Downtown View

Most of Central St Boniface was built at the turn of the century, with some buildings in Old St Boniface earlier than that. The old commercial district along Provencher has recently received a facelift as a result of a CORE Area Initiative project. The Norwood area is a nice residential area with well-maintained homes on tree-lined streets, and the riverside Lyndale Drive (along the River) is popular with runners and cyclists.

    Schools

This area’s schools are administered by the St Boniface School District #4 which has 6 elementary and 2 high schools in the community. There is also a Catholic elementary and high school, and the King George private school. The community is also home to the francophone Universitaire de St-Boniface, and is not far from the downtown campus of the University of Winnipeg.

    Shopping

There is a nice shopping district along Boulevard Provencher, and the Dominion Shopping Centre by the Norwood Bridge. All the shopping opportunities downtown are also close-by.

    Recreation

The community has a wide range of recreational opportunities, with Whittier Park along the Red River on the north, and several parks along the Seine River, cycling along Lyndale drive, winter skating on the Red River & Assiniboine River, walks along the pretty riverside promenade along Avenue Tache. The St Boniface Golf Club and the municipal Windsor Park golf courses are just south of the community, along the banks of the Seine River. There are also 2 outdoor pools, and indoor pool, 3 outdoor rinks, 3 indoor ice arenas, and 2 tennis courts. From a cultural perspective, the Centre culturel Franco-Manitobain puts on theatrical productions, and the St Boniface Museum portrays the area’s French history. Across the bridges to downtown is The Forks Market, and its historical site, The CanWest Global Performing Arts Centre, and the Manitoba Children’s Museum.
