This community lies on the east bank of the Red River, opposite West Kildonan, and north of the main east-west rail lines and accompanying industrial areas, and west of the busy Lagimodiere Blvd (Route 59). The community is bisected by Raleigh St and Gateway Rd, which straddle a northbound rail line. The area known as Elmwood was the only part of the original City of Winnipeg east of the Red River, but with growth and with municipal amalagamation (Kildonan was amalgamated into Winnipeg in 1971), the area east of the River has grown significantly over the years.

The oldest neighbourhood in this part of Winnipeg is Elmwood, with many of the homes in the Elmwood area and southern part of East Kildonan (around Larsen Avenue north, for example) are approaching 80 or more years old, with some close to 100 years old. This working class area recently received a CORE Area Initiative funding to upgrade the area, leading to a rise in infill housing and townhomes. Homes here run $35,000 to $80,000. West of Henderson Highway is Fraser's Grove, which was developed around the park as a luxury community in the 60s, with homes around $175,000. East of Henderson is the community of Rossmere with the post-war era homes typically 50 years old with house prices in the $55,000 to $175,000 range. This community was built around the Rossmere Golf & Country Club. To the east is Valley Gardens, with a number of small and medium-sized parks and the area's Concordia Hospital in one corner.

Newer developments in this community involve artificial lakes to create a community focus. North of Springfield Rd is a new All Seasons community built around the Bunn's Creek Pond. Homes in the area run $70,000 to $250,000 for lakeside properties. Eaglemere, off Molson, has architecturally controlled community built around a long lake. Homes here run $110,000 to $180,000. Further north, straddling Grassie, east of Lagomodiere is the community of Harbour View South, with a smaller lake on its southern part. Homes here run $80,000 to $145,000

    Schools

Most of this area's schools fall under River East School District #9, which includes the schools that used to be in the municipality of Kildonan. The Schools in the Elmwood area are part of Winnipeg Division #1, reflecting that neighbourhoods history. This area has 28 elementary schools, 4 secondary schools, as well as 5 religious/private schools. The area has 2 public libraries.

    Shopping

There are a number of small plazas along Henderson Highway in the west of the community, and along Nairn Ave on the southern edge. The area's mega-mall is Kildonan Place, just to the southeast.

    Recreation

The community has a wide range of recreational opportunities. There is the Kil-Cona Regional Park with its lakes on the eastern edge of the community, several parks along the Red River, including Fraser's Grove, a large athletic park at River East, and a series of parks running the length of Bunn's Creek though the northern part of the community. Golfers have the Rossmere golf club in the middle of the community, Harbour View to the east, and Kildonan Park just across the river. Cross country skiers can do their thing at Kil-Cona Regional Park, along Bunn's Creek and at Frasers Grove Park. There are 10 outdoor rinks, two indoor arenas, a natural skating pond at Fraser's Grove, 2 indoor pools, seven tennis courts( including the prestigious Kildonan Tennis & Canoe Club), the Kildonan Yacht Club, and 3 running tracks
