Neighbourhoods: District of Oak Bay
Oak Bay is an exclusive community of 18,000, and is a separate municipality from Victoria. The community is named for the very prevalent Garry oak (known in the USA as Oregon white oak), which as very twisting branches and barely grows this far north. It was established as a community back when the Inner harbour was just a muddy tidal flat. There is one hospital just to the north and two just to the west.
Schools
The community has several public schools, one for the separate school board, and Oak Bay Community High School. University of Victoria ("UVIC") is located on the north end of Oak Bay, and Camosun College’s main campus is on its eastern boundary.
Shopping
While there are lots of small shops in the area, the nearest Shopping mall is the Hillside Shopping Centre, about half a kilometres west on Lansdowne Rd, and University Shopping Centre to the northwest on McKenzie Ave.
Recreation
This community has two golf courses and two marinas/ yacht clubs. Showing its demographic bias. There are several boat ramps, and a great beach at Willow Beach and to the north along Cadboro Bay. There are great sports facilities at UVIC and at the area’s Oak Bay Recreation Centre. For a family diversion, head to Sealand of the Pacific beside the Oak Bay Marina.
