This part of New Westminster, along the Fraser River waterfront, was originally the city's dockside street and market, and its the original Chinatown. The Westminster Quay was a mid-1980s condo development that accompanied the new SkyTrain line to/from Vancouver. This has led to more tower developments southwest of 8th Street, and there are about 7,000 residents in the downtown area, about 30% being immigrants (form diverse areas like e the United Kingdom, the Philippines and the People's Republic of China). The areas education levels are typical for the city, and average household income was around $50,000. Homes Most Downtown residents live in apartments & condos, with an average of 2 per household. Shopping The area is now home to the Westminster Quay Public Market, and is center of the city's thriving antiques and second-hand stores. Recreation The downtown has a number of mid-size parks scattered around. The New Westminster Regimental Museum, the Samson V Maritime Museum, and the Art Gallery are located here. The nearby Moody Park has an outdoor pool, as well as a nearby Mercer Stadium, Moody Pak Arena, Vincent Massey Auditorium.
