  • Shaughnessy (between Arbutus and Oak Streets, from 16th to 41st Avenues) is an enclave with twisty tree-lined streets, and is home to many heritage buildings and mansions that, over the years, were home to some of Vancouver's richest and most important citizens. Shaughnessy was developed by Canadian Pacific Railway as housing for its executives, and over the years other citizens bough land and built their mansions there. Today, many homes are consulates for foreign governments to represent their citizens and trade interests in western Canada. The community is also popular with top doctors, for its proximity to Vancouver General Hospital.

    Homes
The community is filled with a mix of heritage homes from the early 1900s, and large mansions from the 1920s to 1950s with British or American architectural influences, with a few more recently built (or renovated) ones. Homes in Shaughnessy are on wide (60 ft or greater) lots

    Shopping
There are a number of upscale shops, cater to the community's prosperous residents along this stretch of Granville. There are more shops to the south in neighbouring Kerrisdale, and to the west is the Arbutus Village Shopping Centre.

    Recreation
The community has some small, but well-tended parks around the neighbourhood. Quilchena and VanDusen Botanical Gardens are the largest parks in the area.

    Schools
The neighbourhood is served by 3 elementary schools (including on French Language one, and two high schools. The neighbourhood is close to Langara College, to the south, and the East Broadway area is full of post-secondary institutions, including BCIT's Great Northern Way campus, Vancouver Community College's King Edward campus.
