[ Neighbourhood Map ]
These three communities lie on the eastern edge of downtown, and make up the heart of historic Edmonton. They are sandwiched
between the river and Norwood Blvd/112th Ave. McCauley is the neighbourhood
northeast of downtown, nestled between 97th Street and Commonwealth stadium,
and is hectic anytime there's a concert or football game. The area is also
humming (literally) when "Church Street" (96th Street, with 12 churches in
5 blocks) is busy with weddings and regular services. The Boyle Street
neighbourhood, east of the downtown core also includes Chinatown, is an
iner city area which is beginning to undergo urban renewal. Down
the hill is Riverdale, being in the valley, is generally associated with other nearby
river valley communities such as Cloverdale and Rossdale. These communities are accessible to the LRT at either
the Churchill or the Stadium stations.
All three neighbourhoods are currently experiencing an increase in the rate of development and property
values, mainly due to downtown expansion. However, property values in
Riverdale, because it is strictly residential valley community, and an affluent
ne, are drastically higher and more closely compared to that in other river valley
neighbourhoods.
Schools
This tiny community has three public elementary schools and a separate elementary school, has Victoria Composite High School on its western edge. The University of Alberta is a few minutes away by LRT and the Grant MacEwan College is a kilometre to the west, and the NAIT campus is a kilometre to the north. The public library's main branch is easily accessible, beside Churchill Square.
Shopping
Area shoppers generally head either to Kingsway Garden Mall or into the downtown, with its several shopping malls (all joined by the indoor Pedways). Chinatown is a favourite for shoppers and diners, as well.
Recreation
The area is close to Commonwealth Stadium, home to the Edmonton Eskimos, and the Rexall Place (formerly Skyreach Centre, and the Edmonton Coliseum) which is home to the Edmonton Oilers is a kilometre to the northeast. The River Valley with its miles of recreational pathways is easily accessible from the community, and runs through Kinnaird Park, on the area's eastern edge. The Riverside Golf Course, on the south side of the river, is just across the Dawson Bridge.
