This area is on the hills overlooking the Bow River Valley northwest of the University of Calgary (which is why it was so-named). Varsity was developed in the 1960s and 1970s and has mostly single-family housing. In Varsity Acres, along the winding Varsity Drive and in the area immediately west of Market Mall are clusters of low-rise apartments. Varsity Estates is the area west of 53rd Street and is built around the Silver Springs Golf & Country Club. The area also includes the Research Park, north of the University and immediately adjacent to the Brentwood LRT station. The community has numerous parks that run through it and connect to the parkland along the Bow River. The area is prized for its unobstructed views toward the Rockies and to Canada Olympic Park across the river valley.Schools The community has 3 public and one Catholic elementary schools. All high school students attend at schools a short distance away, across Crowchild Trail. Shopping There are two small plazas in the area, Shaganappi Village and Crowchild Square but the area is dominated by Market Mall. Recreation The area has lots of parkland, which connects to the Bow River recreational pathways that connect to downtown and to Bowness Park. The community is home to the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club, which winds its way around neighbourhood streets. The University presents a number of theatrical performances and movie theatres are nearby at Market Mall and Northland Village. Homes The community is mostly single family homes in a range of styles, with some multi-unit condominiums along Valiant Drive near Shaganappi, and some high rise apartment buildings on Varsity Lane behind Shaganappi Shopping Centre.
