These communities straddle the Bow River floodplain and Bowness Road, west of Shaganappi Trail. Montgomery is on the north bank of the Bow River, nestled between market mall and the large Shouldice Park. This area evolved into a working class community with mostly 1940s-era small, owner-built houses. Bowness lies on the south bank of the Bow River Valley, north of the Trans-Canada Highway (#1). Bowness was developed after a 1911 donation of Bowness Park and a three-span steel bridge to the City (now a designated historical site), after which the City extended street car service to the area. Most of the development in Bowness did not occur until the 1940s. The area is mostly single family homes, though there are some low-rise apartments along Bowness Road. The west end of Bowness is home to the Greenwood Village Mobile home Park.

Schools

The area has five elementary schools and a high school in the public school board.

Shopping

There are two main retail strips in the community. One along 16th Avenue in Montgomery, and one along Bowness Road west of the railway underpass. For mall shopping, area residents head either to Market mall, up the hill above Montgomery, or to Crowfoot Centre, up 85th Street from Bowness.

Recreation

Canada Olympic Park is the geographical high point of the community The recreation in the area is dominated by the Bow River and the tow large parks, Shouldice in the east and Bowness in the west. Shouldice Park has a number of baseball diamonds and a batting cage, as well as an indoor ice arena and an indoor swimming pool. Bowness Park has well-treed greenspace and picnic grounds, with several shallow lagoons used for paddleboats in summer and ice skating in winter. Above Bowness is the jewel of Calgary's sports scene, Canada Olympic Park, with its bobsled, luge, ski jump, ski and snowboard hill, and the Canada Olympic Hall of Fame Museum. For movies, residents head to nearby Crowfoot Centre or Market Mall.

Homes

The community is mostly single family homes, with some multi-unit condominiums along Bowness Rd and 16th Avenue NW
